African archbishop to accuse Rowan Williams of 'betrayal'
Canterbury, England (ENI). The Anglican Archbishop of Uganda, Henry Orombi, will accuse the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, of "betrayal" in a comment piece to be published in Britain's The Times newspaper. According to the blog, or Internet diary, of the newspaper's religion corespondent, Ruth Gledhill, Orombi will say in an article to be published on 1 August that the office of the archbishop of Canterbury is little better than a remnant of colonialism. Catholic presence at Lambeth important says Anglican leader
Canterbury (ENI). Following comments from a cardinal that have caused controversy, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, has welcomed the presence of a delegation from the Roman Catholic Church at the 2008 Lambeth Conference. Speaking during a 24 July interview on the national broadcaster, the BBC, Williams described as "very important" the words of Cardinal Ivan Dias, the Vatican's Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, who had hit the headlines in several British newspapers with his remarks that some Western churches live "myopically in the fleeting present". Lambeth Conference opening on discordant note for Anglicans
Canterbury, England (ENI). When the first Lambeth Conference opened in 1867, only 76 of the Anglican Communion's 144 bishops accepted an invitation by the Archbishop of Canterbury to attend because of disagreement among them about the way the church was shaping-up in British colonies. The impetus for the 1867 meeting came from the Anglican Church in Canada, concerned about the activities of the British-born bishop of Natal in South Africa, John Colenso. He was tolerating polygamy among African converts to Christianity, and questioning traditional doctrines about the Eucharist and eternal punishment. [557 words, ENI-08-0563]

Anglicans face divisions on women and homosexual clergy
London (ENI). A Church of England bishop has said he wants to go over to Rome because of his opposition to women bishops, while in a separate controversy about homosexuality, an openly gay US bishop said the Archbishop of Canterbury is in an "almost untenable" position in his attempts to hold together the worldwide Anglican Communion. Bishop Andrew Burnham of Ebbsfleet, a Church of England cleric who administers parishes opposed to women priests, said in an interview with Britain's national broadcaster, the BBC, that he is awaiting a response from the Vatican following his request to Pope Benedict XVI and Roman Catholic leaders in England and Wales for advice on coming under Rome. Nairobi/Hong Kong (ENI). The Anglican Church of Kenya is to boycott the 2008 Lambeth Conference of Anglican bishops from around the world in a dispute about homosexuality, its leader Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi has announced in Nairobi. "We will not be attending the Lambeth Conference. We have seen certain things in ways and faith that do not agree with how we received the Anglican Communion," Nzimbi told journalists at a media briefing on 10 July in Nairobi. Separately, however, the leader of the Anglican church in Hong Kong appealed to Anglicans to resolve their differences through dialogue and the traditional mechanisms of the Anglican Communion. Catholic and Orthodox warn Church of England on women bishops
Rome (ENI). The Vatican has said a decision by the (Anglican) Church of England to support the consecration of women as bishops is a setback to dialogue efforts with the Roman Catholic Church. "Such a decision signifies a break with the apostolic tradition maintained by all of the churches since the first millennium and is, therefore, a further obstacle to reconciliation between the Catholic Church and the Church of England," said the Vatican statement, released on 8 July by its Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
